Vinayak has been an Advocate & Solicitor in Malaysia for over 34 years, appearing at all levels of the Malaysian Courts. He is a partner of
SKRINE, Advocates & Solicitors, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and heads the firm’s Construction, Engineering and Arbitration Practice Group. SKRINE is one of the largest, full service law firms in Malaysia with over 45 years experience in the legal industry.
Vinayak is primarily engaged in commercial and construction litigation and has appeared as solicitor and counsel in numerous international arbitrations. He has sat as presiding, sole and co-arbitrator in international arbitrations in several countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom and conducted arbitrations under the ICC, SIAC, KLRCA, UNCITRAL, HKIAC and LCIA Rules. He is a Chartered Arbitrator, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a former Chairman of the Malaysian Branch of the Institute. He is also a Fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Arbitrators and of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration.
Vinayak is acknowledged by Chambers & Partners as being one of the most in demand arbitrators in Asia for international arbitration. In his capacity as Counsel, he has been described by the same publication as being an “eloquent lawyer” and “a leading name in arbitration circles”.
From 1998-2003, Vinayak was a Commissioner of the United Nations Compensation Commission (Geneva, Switzerland) sitting on a panel which dealt with construction and civil engineering claims. In May 2003, he was appointed a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (“PCA”), The Hague. He is a Vice Chair of the ICC Commission on Arbitration. From July 2008, Vinayak was appointed to the Panel of Conciliators and Panel of Arbitrators of ICSID.
Vinayak is also a member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Lausanne and is on the Register of Arbitrators of the Olympic Council of Malaysia.
He regularly appears as a guest speaker and has delivered lectures and papers at local and international conferences and seminars as well as at the University of Malaya, the International Islamic University and the Judicial and Legal Officers Training Institute, Malaysia. He has also written numerous articles and chapters on arbitration and other dispute resolution processes which have been published in legal journals and in books on arbitration.
Vinayak was a keen sportsman, with cricket being his favourite game. He has skippered the Malaysian Combined Schools, University of Singapore, Malaysian Bar and Royal Selangor Club, Saturday XI cricket teams.
